Drew Makes Noise is a true one off.

A real DIY artist, his devoutly independent stance recalls those early Guided By Voices albums, just churning out indie banger after indie banger

Clash Magazine

Over the last couple of years, Andrew Wilson, aka Drew Makes Noise, has re-emerged as a serious contender. The Belfast-based artist has been carving out a wonderfully idiosyncratic – not to mention purposefully DIY – niche via singles including ‘Your Garden Grows’ and last year’s ‘Baby Blue’.

The Thin Air

The euphoric chorus of ‘Let’s Break the Night in Love’ hits with the energy of indie Springsteen

Info

Northern Irelands Drew Makes Noise is set to release his debut album Let the Whole Tape Run independently on 24/05/23

The project grew from a necessity to make music that represented the unique mind of the multi-talented artist. The album opens with ‘Tie Me To The Moon’ offering a moment of confusion when the ‘Noise’ is first delivered in the style of a country-folk-song but soon establishes itself as an Indie anthem. Setting the tone for the rest of the album.

Without hesitation the synths and samples arrive in abundance on track number two ‘Hey‘ A celebratory single which lifts the mood from the first note.

Let The Whole Tape Run stylistically transcends several genres with ease. There is something for everyone on this record. Flourishes of Indie, electronic, rock, gospel, folk, pop and more. From start to finish it’s an incredible journey, which establishes Drew Makes Noise as one of Irelands most diversely talented artists. Showcasing a debut album that could very easily become one of the best releases of 2023.

There is an abundance of musical influences evident on this record. Conjuring comparisons to Grandaddy (Flame) and Dinosaur Jr (Lemonade) to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Something to Kill) and many MANY more. All delivered in the singular and unique stylings of Drew Makes Noise.

Following the disbandment of his former project Ed Zealous, the pandemic opened up the time to take control, and set about creating a large piece of work that was an unedited and uncompromising slice of his own loaf. Taking the DIY approach, Drew repurposed the upstairs room of his house and got to exploring his own head, and fleshing out the need to commit some part of his life to an album. The songs for Let The Whole Tape Run came quick and, in the lonely dark lit room, experimentation flowed. When the songs were formed.

Taking the songs and his drummer to Attica studios in Donegal, Drew recorded with Tommy (of Villagers fame). This process continued with recording of the guitars with Ryan McGroarty at Start Together. Production and mixing came from Math Bishop (Two Door Cinema Club and Twin Atlantic) in L.A.

The album will be launched with two full-band live shows. One in Belfast in association with Shine on May 24th at the Ulster Sports Club with very special guest Meljoann. Tickets available HERE

The second show will be in BelloBar, Dublin on May 25th in association with Butter Wouldn’t Melt and with special guest Meljoann. Tickets available HERE

The album is a tour round my own psyche – songs that are personal and also songs that observe people close to me, all sung in the first person. As if the torches they shine might light my own path and hopefully – when the tape has run – towards something like redemption.

Drew Make Noise.

Biography

Drew Makes Noise started as guitarist with indie/dance crossover act Ed Zealous who released their NI Music Prize nominated debut album “Wired” via Fierce Panda subsidiary Club Fandango in 2014.

Since disbandment, he’s been creating a vision in his home studio. Immersed in a world of synths, canned orchestras, guitar effects and late night psychedelic country walks, Drew’s been dreaming up a Psych-Pop-Prog-Rock world all of his own.

Insisting on a DIY aesthetic across the board, Drew released his 1st single “Satellite” in 2020. His DIY video, showing action man going on a comedy space trip was debuted in Clash Magazine, describing Drew as a “genuine DIY artist capable of churning out indie banger after indie banger.”

After having his first show cancelled by the pandemic, Drew spent the following period honing his craft, releasing singles, videos and, recording his debut album. Self-produced but mixed in LA by Math Bishop (Two Door / Twin Atlantic) Drew has widely embellished the kitchen sink approach of his 1st singles.

Single 1 from the album – Secret To Life which took a more subtle approach, evoking Sparklehorse, was lauded by Stephen McCartney of BBC Introducing. The head frying video was nominated for NI Music Prize video of the year.

Three more singles, including Lemonade will be released in advance of the album launch in May 2023.
